Description
This is a school edition of Homer’s Odyssey , Book 19, with vocabulary and brief commentary notes intended to facilitate the rapid reading of the original Greek text in sixth-form classes. The book is laid out in the Ørberg manner and, accordingly, all materials except for the Greek text, the lemmata for the glosses, and quotations of Greek within the glosses themselves, are written entirely in Latin. All aids to understanding any passage of the Greek are presented on the same page, with the exception of words that are repeated in the Greek text, for the explication of which the reader is directed to earlier glosses in the book. The principle of forcing the reader back to the earliest passage in which he first encountered a word (thus helping him to consolidate his mastery of the word) is another that Ørberg himself adopted in his renowned textbooks. Before the completion of this book, there was no suitable school edition of Book 19 of Homer’s Odyssey in Latin readily available. Many pupils come to the learning of Greek after one or more years of Latin, and there is a laudable desire in many pupils (fostered with similar zeal by their masters) to continue their classical training in one of the classical languages. This is particularly true where Ørberg’s books have been adopted as the foundational textbooks for junior classical learning. Pupils at such schools will readily recognise the format of the present book. Hence, there is clearly a need for a Latin edition of this, one of the most beloved books of the Odyssey. Among other fine episodes, the recognition scene with Eurycleia, one of the most memorable in the poem, stands out and is rich in dramatic interest and themes central to the understanding of this great work. The author has consulted the most reputable references works in order to provide pupils with the most accurate and reliable information available, in the hope that this will help them to read Book 19 with fluency and sound understanding. —- ISBN: 9798404544398
